Slavutych was built at the end of the 1980s after the meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) just 45 kilometres to the east. The town served as a new home for the workers of the nuclear power plant, which remained active until 2000, after the old power plant town of Prypyat was evacuated.
